Welcome
September 2104
Dear Parents and Guardians,
A new school year is upon us accompanied by a brand new chemistry classroom and laboratory everything is running . It is encouraged that your students keeps a notebook for class. Either a three-ring- binders or spiral notebook will be fine. Students will also need to bring a scientific calculator to class starting the third week. We do have some classroom calculators, but there are not enough for all students.
Freshman Science will consist of one marking period of physics, one marking period of chemistry, one marking period of biology and one marking period of Earth science. We will be using a variety of texts throughout the course.
Our course text is ‘Chemistry’ published in 2000 by Holt. There will also be several supplemental materials I will be giving your student during the course of the year. Grades in this class are based on homework, quizzes, tests, lab reports, notebook checks and projects. The grading scale for this class is the same as that found in the school planner. We have several resources and services to assist your student in achieving success. I have also a website called Planbook which all of my students can access 24/7. Students can access it via my Weebly website. Planbook has notes, extra examples, due dates, video tutorials, and more. Tutoring is available Monday through Thursday after school in the library to make up absences or for extra assistance in classes, or to make up tests and quizzes. Please remind your students that attending the entire tutoring period makes up two absences for two missed class periods. If students wish to make up an entire day that will require three and one half tutoring sessions.
I also would like to take this opportunity to invite both you and your student to take advantage of the Parent Connect Website that provides 24/7 access to grades. My grades will be updated weekly by Monday of the following week the assignments were due. A few important exceptions that may occur involve formal lab reports, long term projects, and essay exams. These will be entered in a timely fashion. My standard rule of thumb is to give myself the same length of time as the students had to complete the assignment.
If I may be of any further assistance please do not hesitate to contact me at [email protected]. I will respond to you within 24 hours Monday through Friday. I would also like to invite you into the classroom at any time that is convenient to you if you would let to see what is happening first hand in our classroom.
Sincerely,
Tara Mainville
